Fix pink materials, Missing Scripts & upload errors - Avatar Setup Doctor [VRChat / Unity] (Free version)

Imported an avatar or outfit and now something's wrong?

Pink materials, red errors in the Console, "Security Checks Failed", the upload button greyed out, or clothes that don't follow the body...

Avatar Setup Doctor adds a window to Unity. Press Diagnose and it lists what's wrong, why, and how to fix it.

What it checks

• Unity version (VRChat requires 2022.3.22f1)
• Build target set to Windows (a common cause of "Security Checks Failed", especially on Mac)
• Whether VRChat SDK / Modular Avatar / lilToon / VRCFury / AAO are installed
• Pink materials, and the name of the missing shader (lilToon, Poiyomi, etc.)
• Missing Scripts, Missing Prefabs, and fields showing "Missing"
• Humanoid rig and Avatar Descriptor
• Outfit bone names that don't match the avatar (e.g. UpperArm.L vs Left_UpperArm)
• Synced parameter usage (out of 256 bits, including what Modular Avatar adds)
• Texture memory and the PC performance rank estimate
• Settings that make the VRChat SDK block uploading: missing menu/parameters, a menu using unregistered parameters, a puppet using a Bool, no hand mask on the Gesture layer, menu icons too large or uncompressed, audio without "Load In Background", textures without "Streaming Mipmaps"
• Project path problems, an old SDK left in Assets, leftover Dynamic Bones
• Common red Console errors, explained (the original error text is kept as is)

All fixes can be undone with Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac).

Language

English and Japanese interface. It shows English automatically unless your Unity or OS language is Japanese, and you can switch with the "日本語 / English" toggle at the top of the window. The menu item name stays in Japanese: Tools > 改変おたすけ診断.

Good for

• You're new to avatar editing and the errors make no sense
• An outfit doesn't follow the body
• You edit avatars on a Mac
• You want to ask for help but don't know what to tell people

Not for

• If you can already read and fix these errors yourself, you probably won't learn much new
• Reshaping an outfit to fit a body - this tool finds causes, it doesn't refit clothes

Requirements

• Unity 2022.3.22f1
• Works even without VRChat SDK or Modular Avatar installed (it tells you they're missing)
• Tested by the creator on Mac. Built only with standard Unity features, so it should work the same on Windows - if you hit a bug, please send us a message on Jinxxy.

Install

• Drag the .unitypackage into your project and Import
• Open Tools > 改変おたすけ診断
• Press Diagnose

Notes

• It only changes your files when you press a fix button. Diagnosing never modifies your avatar.
• It can't catch every possible problem. Please also check the avatar's and outfit's own instructions.
• This is not an official VRChat tool.
